How it is done

When to seek treatment:

The most important part of the instrumentation used by your equine dentist is the full mouth speculum (gag) this enables a thorough examination of the horses mouth by palpitation and torch light. This is required in order to obtain a primary dental plan before carrying out any necessary treatment. With out the use of the speculum it is impossible to do a thorough examination of the horses mouth. Record cards are used to document past and present history with regards to dentition, health and performance and note any treatment that has been carried out or required. Only after this examination has taken place, can treatment occur using floats (rasps) or power instruments if required. The mouth is then balanced by your equine dental technician to prevent further dental abnormalities and maintain the horses natural dental equilibrium.
